Cat's paw.
cats paws are incredibly sensitive. they use them to feel pain and to determine what they are standing on. you will often see your cat tapping things with their paws to try and figure out what they are.
they generally have five toe pads and claws.however, some cats may have as many as 6 or 7. Also the front paws have another pad on the inside of the wrist, like a 6th finger...
It's called a Carpal pad. this is to function as an anti-skidding device while jumping.
cats amazing retractable claws can whip out when they are in D.a.n.g.er.
they extend them in hunting, self defense, climbing, jumping and to provide eXtra traction on soft surfaces like your carpet , for example.

scratching posts...
providing your cat with a specific place to scratch will help them exercise their claws and
keep your furniture in good condition.
There are so many to choose from..
& Others.. just google them yourself.
keep em; trim.
cats claws generally needs trimming every 3-4 weeks. You can buy specialist claw trimmers from the pet supply shops. the back claws arent as sharp as the front ones so often dont need clipping.
cats treats..
choose a time when youre cat is relaxed or sleepy.and dont expect to get to all the claws in one sitting. have a treat ready to reward your cat at the end..
hold the paw and press the toe pad gently to extend the claw.notice the pink tissue on the inside.
this is the quick.Avoid cutting this because it will cause pain and bleeding.
Aim to halfway between the quick and the tip.
so, kids if you're reading and wanting to clip their nails.
please let the adults do this.your job is too keep an eye and keep the cat relaxed by stroking it gently. dont forget the special treat :)
